The featured content star

Featured content represents the best that Wikipedia has to offer. These are the articles, pictures, and other contributions that showcase the polished result of the collaborative efforts that drive Wikipedia. All featured content undergoes a thorough review process to ensure that it meets the highest standards and can serve as an example of our end goals. A small bronze star (The featured content star) in the top right corner of a page indicates that the content is featured. This page gives links to all of Wikipedia's featured content and showcases one randomly selected example of each type of content. You can view another random content selection.

Flag of Australia

The Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the world's smallest continent and a number of islands, the largest of which is Tasmania. Australia has been inhabited for about 50,000 years by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Eastern Australia was claimed by the British in 1770, and officially settled as a British penal colony on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, six largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established within Australia over the course of the 19th century. On 1 January 1901 the six colonies federated and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has had a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. Australia currently has a population of about 20 million, concentrated mainly in the coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

This knob is more prominent on males than on females and can be used for sexing by 6–8 weeks of age. Wild Swan Geese can be found in Mongolia and eastern Russia. They are migratory and winter mostly in south and east China.

Featured list: List of circulating currencies

This list of circulating currencies contains the 182 current official or de facto currencies of the 192 United Nations member states, 1 UN observer state, 4 partially recognized sovereign states, 6 unrecognized countries, and 32 dependencies. The only dependencies and unrecognized countries listed here use a currency other than that of the sovereign state that administers them or has de jure jurisdiction over them. Currencies used in places of extra-territoriality like the United Nations or the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and scrips used by private entities like the Disney dollar and the ora are not under the purview of this list.

A currency is a unit of exchange and hence a kind of money and medium of exchange. Currency includes "paper" banknotes and metal coins. Countries generally have a monopoly on the issuing of currency, although some countries share currencies with other countries. Today, currencies are the dominant means of exchange. Different countries may use the same term to refer to their respective currencies, even though the currencies may have little else to do with each other. A place that is technically part of another country sometimes uses a different currency from that of the parent country.
